Hattie ate breakfast at the girls’ table. Having stayed up all night attending to four wounded Scouts, her eyes were dry with exhaustion. The air of the canteen felt heavy and oppressive, and the paranoia in the Bunker was palpable. Word of what had happened had already spread. The Commander had arranged an emergency assembly for 11 o’clock, in order to address the situation.

Meanwhile, the girls bombarded Hattie with relentless questions.

“Pete’s lost an eye?” asked Grace, her voice full of disgust.

“Was Noah involved?” Melissa enquired, her face ghastly pale.

Hattie sat there, frozen, too scattered to respond properly.

“Ladies, ladies,” said Charlotte, waving her hands in the air. “One at a time.” She nodded at Hattie, who wiped her eyes as she started to speak.

“It all feels like a dream. I don’t know what to tell you.” She reached down to take a disheartened bite from her piece of unbuttered toast, while the girls, agitated, began to murmur.

“But why would he do it?” asked Olivia, referring to Marcus. “I don’t understand…” Her blue eyes were drooping, and her parted lips quivered, which made Hattie feel a little sick.

“Me neither…” Hattie was on the brink of tears. Charlotte reached to wrap her arm around her shoulder, and the girl burst out crying. The two went off together while the rest of the canteen turned to watch, staring in cold silence as they left through the door.
